The paintbrush: this year’s festival must-have accessory?

Each year it seems that more and more festivals are vying to grab the remains of our student loans by tempting us with impressive line-ups and extra entertainment. However, if you want your 2011 festival experience to be a little less mainstream, why not get creative and head to Austria for the World Bodypainting Festival?! Musical entertainment will still feature but it takes a backseat to allow the weird and wonderful world of body art to take centre stage.

The Bodypainting Academy will kick start proceedings on 27th June, with workshops and demonstrations hoping to inspire a new generation of body artists.  On 29th June the BodyCircus ‘Surreal Ballroom’ event will hit the Fabrik venue, an old factory just outside of the town of Pörtschach. Finally the main festival will take place between 1st and 3rd July within the boundaries of BodyPaint City; four zones alongside  Lake Wörthersee will be home to artists and amateurs from all over the world, painting by day and celebrating by night! There are various categories for competitors to enter, including Brush/Sponge, Special Effects and even a UV nocturnal extravaganza, as well as a special category for non-professionals.

Tickets to this artistic wonderland are a steal compared to the standard music festival, with earlybird offers from €10.50 (1 day festival entry) to €29 (all 3 days). If the thought of this visual feast has you budding photographers out there licking your lips in anticipation, there is always the opportunity to splash out €139 on a ‘Photo Ticket’ that will grant you access to a restricted area reserved purely for creating bodypainting-inspired photographic magic, as well as a privileged position in front of the main stage and entry into the photographic contest.

If all of this is not quite enough to convince you that Austria should be your 2011 summer festival destination, I leave you with one final nugget on information that is sure to seal the deal: Shaggy will be there. Boombastic.
